A little chihuahua mix (I think she might be part rat terrier) came up and needed someone with some fostering experience and even though I had no intention of taking in a long-term pup, I cannot help but open my heart and my home to these animals in their time of need. So Kelvin is with one of our newest Waggy fosters, while I took in a dog from Animal Care and Control.

She came with the name Cookie (like so many others), so I renamed her Jezebel, which has quickly morphed into Jezzybelle. At just two years old, nine pounds and emaciated, she has some issues but they are nothing that cannot be cured with a few weeks of good food and a safe, secure, and loving environment. She is fear "aggressive" in that she'll growl and shriek when intimidated but if you give her space and let her warm up to you on her own, you'll find a loyal and loving little friend who won't leave your side. (She spends most of her time trying to get up on the couch for some quality snuggle time!)

Jezzy does need to learn some manners but she gets along with other dogs and has no resource guarding issues at all. She is a bit nervous walking outside and needs some work on her housebreaking but with patience and consistency, this smart girl will get it in no time at all. She would do best in a home with no children and some dog experience but I think that once she comes out of her shell, she will soon be the most popular pup on the block.
I would highly suggest printing it out and keeping it somewhere where you'll easily find it in case of an emergency. (I plan on putting it right up on the fridge!)
That and my last foster became another permanent family member! Penelope (originally Kaitlin and then Lily) and Lola May bonded so closely that I didn't have the heart to separate them, so now we are a two chihuahua household. Well, technically a 1.5 chi household, seeing as how Penelope is half dachshund.
While this is not a personal blog by any means, I feel it important to mention that my living situation has changed. I am no longer with my fiance and he kept custody of two of our dogs. He kept Rhea, our happy-go-lucky spaniel mix, and he also kept Dexter as he was proving very difficult to place and has some aggression issues that would make him unsuitable for most homes. I have my pug mix, Maximus, who I brought to the relationship and the two little girls.

For right now, while I readjust, long-term fostering probably is not an ideal situation for the puppies or for me. It is important to know when to say no, despite how difficult that may be. I will be taking in a little guy, Kelvin, while his foster mom is on vacation. Kelvin is available for permanent adoption and if you are interested, please visit the Waggytail Rescue website to submit an application.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1118574255882639798.post-60271906442216049332011-09-12T08:50:00.000-04:002011-09-12T08:50:26.559-04:00Moose & Maverick: Our Tennessee Titans!Moose and Maverick (originally Max - but that got a little too confusing with a Maximus already living in the house, were quite the pair. When I picked them up at the ASPCA (after a 4 hour wait), they had come a long, long way from Tennessee from a hoarder who may or may not have been using them as boa constrictor food. Yikes! They came along with a pup by the name of Chloe, but I dropped Chloe off with her foster momma on my way home, so I didn't get a chance to get any pictures of her.

I'm Moose! A 7 lb Chihuahua who survived the boa!

At first, they were the most scared little creatures I had ever encountered. Maverick managed to lodge himself behind our refrigerator and it took some serious time and moving of heavy appliances in order to get him back out. For the first few hours they just hid under our printer table, snuggled up with one another, wondering where the heck they had ended up now.

Unlike Moose, Maverick is a 5 month old pup who was much more keen on exploring and making buddies with the other dogs in the house, after we introduced them one at a time (we go from our calmest, least threatening pup to most energetic, in order to see how they interact with other dogs and so as not to overwhelm them all at once.). Isn't Maverick handsome? When he grows up he is going to look just like a mini German Shepard Dog.

Maverick making fast friends with Dexter

Needless to say, neither of them had ever been on a walk before, so the first attempt was comical. There were a lot of backflips and lying down and not much walking to be done, but I am happy to report that in less than 24 hours, Moose man is almost a normal walker, so long as no strollers or small children come by.
Maverick (who may now be back to Max) is now with his long-term foster mom who will provide us with more information, once he is settled into his new home and once we get to know Moose a bit better, I'll do a whole post just on the little guy because he definitely deserves to be in the spotlight after all he has been through.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1118574255882639798.post-26449144631601625122011-08-31T12:19:00.001-04:002011-08-31T12:19:12.394-04:00Our "Agressive" Foster Dog Playing With Lola May
He had shown some fear aggression issues with his new adopter and we decided that this was something that we wanted to take on. Sure, the easy dogs are wonderful. There is nothing like having a perfect little companion to join your gang, but we like a challenge. Plus, we know that these dogs are harder to adopt out and find foster homes for, so we are happy to work with them until they are ready to go to their new homes. To be able to see these dogs grow and transform is one of the most worthwhile things in the whole world.

Aren't I handsome?

We figured he needed a new moniker to go along with his new start at life, so we came up with Dexter because he is so handsome that he gets away with murder! He did come with some serious fear aggression issues, particularly towards women, that we believe were a product of his past. His original owner had dropped him at ACC off at just 8 months old to be euthanized! One can only imagine how she had attempted to "train" the poor little guy. Our best guess is with a lot of abusive, negative punishment for him to lash out the way that he does. It is no wonder he was terrified and felt the need to defend himself.

I'm such a mean doggy. Now give me belly rubs.

He does wonderfully with Ross and while I'm gotten my fair share of scrapes, you'd think that Ross had been his best pal for years. The two of them just seem to be soul mates and he listens to his every word. He also absolutely loves playing with Maximus and Rhea and though he is very good with tiny Lola, she is not to fond of his puppy antics. He is wonderful about sharing his toys, has no food aggression issues and while he can get a little growly if you try to take away his rawhide, he will happily trade it for a tasty treat. He sleeps happily in his crate at night and does his business outside, rarely having an accident inside and he is also getting used to the idea of the wee-wee pads in case of a potty emergency.

Patiently waiting for my turn with the toy.

He is a wonderful little dog who just need to go to the right owner who will continue with lots of positive reinforcement, while not allowing him to exhibit aggressive behavior. Chances are that he will be with us for quite some time as he works out some of his issues but we have already seen so much improvement in just one short week! I think with just some TLC, lots of positive reinforcement and some consistency, he will be an amazing pet. That said, he does seem to do better with confident men and is more likely to lash out at women, especially if they seem nervous or tense around him.

We look forward to watching him grow and help him get over his fears and learn that no one is going to hurt him!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1118574255882639798.post-82719090651012182342011-08-21T15:03:00.002-04:002011-08-21T15:03:39.066-04:00Success Stories: From Casper to JasperCasper didn't even make it to our Petfinder.com page before we were contacted by good friends of Waggytail Rescue. A lovely family, who had lost their own chi mix earlier in the summer due to a tragic accident, had been looking for a a replacement friend for their remaining Chihuahua who was lost without her companion. Casper had proven himself to be quite loving with his tiny foster sister, so we thought this might just be the perfect match.
Well, it didn't take more than a few minutes after meeting Casper for them to decide that this was going to be a good fit for their family. Casper, who now goes by Jasper, is living the life and splitting his time between the Brooklyn waterfront and his new family's home upstate. In addition to a breakfast of high-quality kibble, both he and his Chihuahua sister enjoy home cooked dog-friendly dinners, so he is being spoiled rotten and loving every minute of his new life.

To go from a hoarder in Tennessee with 41 dogs to living the New York high life in a matter of weeks, Jasper really hit the jackpot and we have saved another dog from needlessly being euthanized.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1118574255882639798.post-59652059091038098802011-08-09T07:12:00.000-04:002011-08-09T07:12:17.082-04:00Success Stories: Spanky!Sailor Spanky of the USS Waggytail has found a loving forever home with a wonderful couple in Brooklyn who has just lost their beloved Chihuahua to kidney failure. Casper appears to be about a 1-2 year old 7 pound Chihuhua/Italian Greyhound mix who came from a hoarder in Tennessee and has been with us for about a week so far. He is the sweetest little thing, with a smile that will warm your heart and while he can be initially shy (though not the least bit fear aggressive and doesn't have a mean, grompy bone in his body), he warms up to people quickly and it is the most magical thing in the world. All he wants is snuggles and scratches!

Safe and happy after his long trip up from TN. Look at that smile!

Coming from a hoarding situation, he still has some housebreaking issues that he needs to work on though he is getting the hang of it with regular walks and will go potty as soon as he goes outside. He needs some work on his confidence as he gets frightened easily, but I think this is something that will easily resolve itself with some consistency and positive human interaction. He gets on great with dogs of all sizes and is wonderful with children. Because of his extremely timid nature, it will be very important that he receives lots of positive reinforcement for good behavior and is given a chance to become more confident.

He is still getting over a touch of a cold and we are working on showing the little guy that humans are his friends and that he is not going to get in trouble for eating a meal or taking a treat, so he will probably be up for adoption in about a week or two. He is crate trained - we had him share a crate with our pug mix the first few nights since he was used to be surrounded by so many dogs, but the past few nights he has done just fine on his own and he will let you know in the morning when he needs to go out for his walk.
Overall, I have to say that he is one of the sweetest, most loving and adorable dogs that I have ever come across and he will make a wonderful companion though would probably do best somewhere without too much commotion so that he can feel safe and secure.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0New York, NY, USA40.7143528 -74.005973140.5217853 -74.3218301 40.9069203 -73.690116100000012tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1118574255882639798.post-7130651082163037602011-08-05T22:59:00.002-04:002011-08-12T21:16:32.058-04:00[UPDATE] August 21st, 2011: Waggytail Birthday BBQ!

Waggytail is celebrating their birthday and there is nothing more than we would love for you (and your furry friends) to attend! It is pretty much an event not to be missed and we hope to see you there!
In the unfortunate case that you are unable to attend but would still like to send a birthday gift along to Waggytail, you can always make a monetary donation through our website at Waggytail Rescue but we are also in need of other things for our little pups.

This was a non-Waggy dog who I re-named Sophia (she had originally come with the moniker of Foxy, but that just seemed too LA to me.) Well, after all, she was from LA. She came from a foster group that primarily focuses on saving small dogs from LA's overcrowded shelters and she was a beaut!

Sophia is a young pup - probably just a year old, so having her around was like doggy daycare at my house everyday. Maximus and Rhea were always exhausted at the end of the day and her Royal Highness Lola May was having none of this rambunctious pup, though she always did her best to be civil.

This particular rescue group does adoption events every weekend at various Canine Styles locations around the city, so this pretty little girl was snatched up in no time! Not even one week after coming in to our home, she was already off to her forever home. Even though her visit was brief, we couldn't not include her as she was one of our fluffies and such a lovely and fun loving one at that!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1118574255882639798.post-1940232274324206022011-07-31T11:50:00.001-04:002011-08-07T08:51:41.531-04:00How to Start FosteringI can primarily speak from my awesome experience with Waggytail Rescue. Prior to contacting them, I had reached out to two other organizations and received no response - not because I wasn't qualified but unfortunately, many of these groups are understaffed and simply don't have the time and resources to reply back to all applicants. This means that many dogs who could be pulled from shelters don't because there are no approved fosters available. If you are interested, I would suggest reaching out to multiple groups. I am of course quite bias and strongly recommend Waggy. We are desperately in need of fosters and we have made it a priority to respond to each and every application that comes in and match a foster with a dog that is well suited for them.

For more info on fostering through Waggytail, you can go straight to our Foster a Waggytail website for more information. You will need to fill out an application and email it back to us. Once everything checks out, we will set you up with a foster advisor and match you up with a dog. Please note that the majority of the dogs on our Petfinder site are already in foster homes, so you will most likely be paired up with a dog directly from a shelter.

Since Waggytail is primarily a Chihuahua and small dog rescue group, there are other organizations that focus on larger dogs, for a full list of organizations that work with the Mayor's Alliance for Animals (the larger organization that oversees foster groups), you can go here for the full list of Alliance Participating Organizations.

I cannot say enough about Waggytail. I feel like all of the fosters and foster advisors are one big family, working together to do the best for these little animals. It is not always an easy job. We often don't have full backgrounds on these animals and some come to us with a whole host of problems (which is how they end up being fostered instead of directly adopted from the shelters) but many of the issues quickly resolve themselves with the consistency and TLC that these dogs can only receive in a home, not in an overcrowded, noisy, scary shelter.

Please, open your heart and your home to these animals, and I promise that you will be rewarded many times over. Sure the dogs reap great rewards, but the joy one gets from helping these dogs just cannot be described in words.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1118574255882639798.post-74516949247203873812011-07-26T11:21:00.002-04:002011-07-26T11:21:49.214-04:00Foster Fluffies Now Have an Amazon WishlistAfter yesterday's post, I decided I would put together an Amazon wishlist of things that would be useful for the Foster Fluffies (and their humans) to have on hand. These items will NOT be used for our own personal pets - these are solely for the care of the fosters while they are in our homes. Foster parents are unpaid volunteers, we do this out of the love of our hearts and everything for these little guys come straight out of our pockets and we don't think twice. Be it a puppy with pneumonia who needs a vaporizer or just a scared and finicky eater who is only going to eat wet food that costs three dollars a can, call me nuts, but these are living creatures that need to be taken care of too.

Now, I know many people have asked how they can help and I always point you straight to the Waggytail Rescue page. Please, please, please continue to donate to Waggy. They need money, now more than ever as they provide medical care and other services to dogs when they need them most, but if you are in the mood to buy a present for a little pup that is staying with us, please check out our Foster Essentials Amazon Wishlist of the things that we need the most at this time. I have also created a permanent link in the sidebar and as needs change, I will be constantly updating.

Of the items listed here, the Sherpa carrier is probably the most essential at this point. NYC transport requires that dogs be in enclosed carriers and many of ours have fallen to pieces and the doggies deserve to be safe and comfy on the way to their foster homes and vet visits. Plus, Amazon has the best prices on these carriers that I have ever seen!

Even seasoned dog owners can sometimes be unprepared because they forget or often don't realize that many of these rescue dogs are not ordinary dogs. Many of them have had little to no positive human interaction and come with their own emotional baggage and often no training - or what I like to call anti-training. They may have had bad behaviors reinforced in their previous lives and before they can become ready for the permanent homes, it is a good idea to start working on issues to make them more attractive to prospective adopters.

For some absolutely great advice you can check out the Waggy Foster Essentials which give some great tips and also provide links to some awesome resources, but here are a few of my own tips, tricks and recommendations. (Some of them borrowed from Waggy, of course, I can't suggest enough how great their foster essentials tips are.)

To make it simple, and because I like lists, I'll lay out the essentials and the not-so-essentials that I find really helpful.

Foster Must-Haves: Part I

You will need to provide a collar or harness and a leash for your new foster friend. For smaller pups, I'd strongly recommend a harness because they have tiny little tracheae that don't hold up well to pressure.

A high quality food can also make a huge difference and I think that Dog Food Analysis does a good job of laying out some good food choices, but I can write a whole separate post on this and will at some point soon.

Treats. These can be great for getting a timid dog to open up to you and also for working on basic obedience and behavioral training. Believe it or not, dogs can be very treat picky, so having a bit of a selection on hand never hurts. Positive reinforcement goes a long way, but don't over treat your dog or you'll end up with a dog that refuses to eat their food and has a whole world of tummy problems.

Poop bags. Be a good neighbor, pick up your dogs poo and help prevent the spread of disease and parasites. No need to buy fancy ones from the pet store - any plastic bag will do and I find that the ones that they deliver newspapers in to be particularly well suited for the job.

Paper towels. And more paper towels. And when you think you have enough, buy another roll or two. Many of these dogs have never been housebroken food changes and environment changes lead to tummy upset.

Cleaning supplies. Everyone seems to love Nature's Miracle but I'm personally a fan of Simple Solution (I like the smell of it). If you're a bit dense like I am or just a victim of circumstance and have a heavily carpeted house and multiple dogs, I also strongly recommend a Resolve-type carpet foam cleaner. I'm partial to the Target brand one myself.

Wee-wee pads. Many of these dogs have never gone to the bathroom outside and it may take them a bit of time to warm up to the idea and not be nervous going outside. Ideally, you are not giving your foster free run of the house, so make sure they have access to a place where they can go potty and reward the heck out of them with they do.

This was a Waggy tip that I have found beyond useful. Stock up on the dollar store shower curtain liners and if you have anything that you don't want peed, pooped or puked on, cover it up with a curtain liner. 99 cents is a lot cheaper than having to deep clean or replace a sofa.

Bedding and snuggle blankets and towels that you don't mind ever using again. Petco sells some very inexpensive blankets in the cat section that are extremely soft and my dogs go bonkers for.

There are many other things that I have found to be useful in my few short months as a doggy foster parent and please note that I am NOT a certified trainer or animal medical professional. I am just a foster momma, dealing primarily little dogs, and I love sharing what I know with anyone who may be interested.

From a scared pup who wanted nothing to do with people and spent the majority of her time hiding under the bed, to a beautiful little girl who actively sought out affection from people, Margot was a perfect example of what a little consistency and TLC can do for a frightened shelter dog. Yet, because of some of her quirks, there weren't too many people who were interested in making this shy little senior a part of their family.

Thankfully, Margot found her perfect home with a lovely couple in Manhattan who were already well-versed with rescue dogs, having adopted a senior Pom just two years ago by the name of Cookie. When we first met her new parents we could not have been more excited at what a perfect match they were for Margot and we were so glad when they chose to make her part of their family. Now Margot and Cookie spend their days going on long walks, going to the park and meeting and being adored by their human parents' friends. Finding these dogs their perfect families is what this is all about!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1118574255882639798.post-85051698803569771132011-07-23T10:48:00.001-04:002011-07-23T11:52:53.602-04:00Success Stories: Merlin!Merlin was our very first foster and while it doesn't seem like that long ago, quite a few other dogs have come through here since then who we have to focus our energies on. That said, I want this blog to chronicle not just the hardships that these dogs endure and make them a "Personals" section for the pups, but I also want to showcase just how wonderful life can be for these dogs when they make it to their forever homes.

After everything Merlin had been through, it only seems fair that he ended up in the most perfect of homes for him. He is now known as Mr. Merlin Merlinsky Pupalupagus and is in a home with two human parents, their three adopted children and two cats. Talk about having hearts of gold! Merlin always has someone to play and snuggle with. His foster mom, Elise, takes Merlin with him nearly everywhere he goes and since his vet is literally down the block, every once in a while he will go and hang out there too since Dr. G had taken such a shine to the little guy. I was lucky enough to run into the distinguished little man while there with one of our other fosters and he recognized my voice right away and ran across the waiting room and jumped in my lap. If that is not the ultimate reward for saving a dogs life, then I don't know what is.

Here are just a few pictures of the little man in his new home. His new mom is amazing about keeping us up to date and has even extended a very welcome helping hand to Waggytail when needed. If only there were more people like here in the world, it would certainly be a better place!
For the first week or so, he really favored the other three legs and he would hold up the injured leg when walking at a quicker pace. We went for his post-surgery follow-up 10 days after his procedure and the vet said he was doing great. We are doing physical therapy with him at home to make sure that he has a good range of motion in his leg and each day he is using the leg more and more. Pretty soon he will be running and jumping with his foster siblings who cannot wait to play with their buddy.
The particular procedure is known as a Femoral Head and Neck Ostectomy (FHO). In small dogs, like Spanky, recovery is great, though it will be important to keep him at an ideal weight so as not to unnecessarily stress the joint. He is finally ready to head to his forever home, so if you are interested in adopting Spanky, please check out his Petfinder profile and submit an application (which you can find on the Waggytail site).
The process of picking her up was far from smooth, but I knew from the second that I saw her, that there was no way I was letting her spend another minute there. Weighing less than 3lbs, it was clear that the tiny 9 year old Chihuahua had recently had a rough go of it. Yet, despite being severely underweight, with pneumonia and a mouth of infected teeth, all Lola wanted to do was love and never ever wanted to be left behind. There was no vet at the Brooklyn shelter that day and they were not going to release her to me, as she had not been given her rabies vaccine (even though my pick-up had been planned days in advance) but I refused to leave without her and eventually they agreed to let me drive her over to the Manhattan shelter so that she could get her vaccine and finally go home.

A still very skinny Lola May, settling in to her new surroundings

The first few weeks were not easy - even a tiny dog can make a heck of a lot of noise when they have a nasty case of kennel cough and pneumonia! There were a few trips to my vet and many more sleepless nights with a steam vaporizer and a jar of honey (both are a HUGE help when you have a dog with KC). But each day she put on another ounce or two and eventually the coughing and sniffling stopped enough that we could get her in to the rescue vet to have her teensy teeth cleaned and the badly infected ones pulled.

Honestly, one of my biggest fears with having such a tiny dog in our home, was that Maximus or Rhea would accidentally smush her. Or that they would think she was a rodent and try to hunt her. 101 awful scenarios ran through my head, so while I was at work, Lola spent her first week hanging out in the dressing room off of our bathroom. Thankfully, both of our dogs took to her like fish to water and her big brother loves having a new friend to cuddle with.

Lola and her big brother during her first week with us

After seeing how well she got on with the other dogs, I just couldn't imagine ever letting her go. It became pretty clear that Lola was going to be a foster "failure" and would spend the rest of her days with us.
His surgery was supposed to be scheduled for Thursday but with Dr. Stephanie Janeczko’s resignation from the ACC this morning, this is now up in the air. See, Dr. Janeczko was supposed to be helping us coordinate the surgery due to Brooklyn ACC’s serious failure to care for this dog. Now that she is gone there has been nothing but radio silence and no one is telling Waggy anything. Once again, Spanky has been let down by a system that was supposed to care for him.

Waggy is looking at some pretty serious medical bills, since the surgery alone will probably range from anywhere to $4,000 to $6,000, and he will have additional follow-up medical expenses but can you really say no to this face?

He has already been through so much and is a total trooper. Even with his injuries, nothing will keep him from loving on his people and the little guy loves nothing more than being on the couch next to his foster dad or curled up on the bed with his foster mom and siblings. Not once during this whole ordeal has he gotten grumpy or snapped at anyone. Can you imagine being in that much pain and still being unbelievably sweet to everyone around you?

Please help Spanky get the care that he needs and deserves. Even with everything he has been through, he is so full of love and enjoys nothing more than being right up against his people and stealing Pringles from his foster dad. We have been encouraging his foster siblings to give him some space, since he is still in pretty fragile condition and needs to get his rest, but he is is very good with them and we cannot wait until he is doing better so that we can really get to know him!

Things have worked out in Spanky’s favor though and he will be getting the surgery that he needs to repair his injuries this Thursday! There has been an enormous outpouring of support for this little guy and his awful situation, so we want to thank everyone who has wished Spanky well and donated to his medical care. That said, he still has a long road to recovery up ahead and will need all of the help he can get. Since Waggy often takes the broken dogs, the ones that no one else will take, we definitely rack up the medical bills!

Please help Waggytail Rescue by going to our page and donating towards the care of these special dogs who are being given a second chance at having a most awesome life.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1118574255882639798.post-30925355472742641252011-06-06T09:35:00.000-04:002011-08-09T07:05:46.284-04:00URGENT: Sailor Spanky of the USS Waggytail needs your help!A lot has gone on in Flufflandia over the past month, but before I even begin to get into those (awesome and happy) events, I want to focus on the more urgent events that have occurred over the past 24 hours.

Meet Sailor Spanky of the USS Waggytail (formerly known as Buger)! This little man was brought to Waggy's attention because he was in need of a foster home where he could rest and recover from a possible fractured pelvis. We were told that he wouldn't need any additional care - simply cage rest for about four weeks - and then he could go to his forever home.

Well, it wasn't until the Brooklyn ACC knew that we were on the way that we were informed that his condition might be a bit more serious. Sailor Spanks would need follow-up x-rays, since these hadn't been during the three days that he was at the ACC, even though it was evident that there may be a more serious problem that a possible simple fracture.

When I picked him up, he was handed to me in a box and the staff member knew next to nothing about his condition but we took him sight unseen because, well, I am a sucker and am simply not going to let a good dog hang around a place like that. Once we were in the car, I opened up the box and saw our little buddy for the first time. He was clearly very out of it from his medication, but happy to be out of the loud, scary shelter.

I also got a chance to see his injuries a bit better and saw that his left leg was swollen to about three times its normal size and that he had deep bruising extending from under his scrotum all the way down his left leg. Spanky was not in good shape and was not able to walk or stand. This was starting to look far more serious that a simple pelvic fracture. Yet, despite all of this, he remained sweet and trusting.

His shelter medical notes stated that he had been on pain medication and I (stupidly, I know) assumed that the bottle of medication I was given was more medication to manage his pain. It was only when I got home and had a chance to take a closer look and saw that the bottle I had been given was antibiotics and not the pain medication that this dog would desperately need. I could only assume that this was a mistake and either they gave me the wrong pills or forgot to also give me pain medication - either way, I was more than happy to go back to Brooklyn and get Spanky what he needed.

This is when the situation took a turn for the worse. I called and was informed that no, it was not a mistake, they just don't send pain meds home with dogs. Seriously? You discharge a dog with a possible fracture and severe bruising and swelling without anything to treat the pain? (Keep in mind that I am also not just someone walking in off the street, I am a foster with an approved rescue organization who has a long-standing relationship with the ACC.) To me this sort of treatment was simply inhumane and I was (and still am) extremely angry.

Think it couldn't get worse, right? Well, it does. Waggytail's fearless leader, Holly, then emailed the ACC to find out what exactly was going on. Obviously, this was a mistake and a big misunderstanding. The ACC confirmed, once again, that this was not a mistake and then started providing us with information about the extent of his injuries that we were not given either before picking him up or upon discharge. The poor dog has a fractured femur, in addition to his possible pelvis fracture, and the ACC then claimed that the only reason that they didn't do x-rays was because I was on my way to pick him up, even though they had already had him for three days! The one thing it did clearly state was that he was to continue on his prescribed pain meds - the same ones that the ACC refused to give me.

Now, believe it or not, it is even more complicated than everything above but at a certain point it just becomes entirely too ludicrous to contain in one single post. What matter is that Spanky is now safe and sound and will be seeing Waggy's vet in a matter of moments to actually determine the extent of his injuries and get the care and pain management that he deserves.
One of the tough parts of saving doggies is seeing these sorts of things, but their kisses and love are ALWAYS worth it!**

Greetings from the Waggyverse! We have a new little friend who is in need of some serious medical care, as well as the standard TLC that all of our Waggys receive while they are with us. Poor Zoe was picked up from Animal Care & Control with two extremely large mammary masses that had clearly been neglected. Both of the lumps where ulcerated and infected but despite all of this, she was still extremely friendly, proof that dogs are just the most amazing creatures!

According to her amazing foster momma, Zoe is the so, so, so, so sweet, even though she has been through so much. She is doing great on the wee-wee pad and looks so much better after being washed and groomed. Isn't she just the most adorable thing ever?
As you can see, Zoe is in desperate need of medical care before she is adopted and it is going to cost a pretty penny, but it is always worth even cent! If you are able to, please consider helping defray the cost of her care by donating at http://www.waggytailrescue.com/. Every little bit helps when we are trying to help these amazing animals.
[Pupdate: To give this amazing little girl a fresh start, her foster mom has named her Zoe. I think it's a great choice!]Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1118574255882639798.post-60120981648944029782011-04-30T16:52:00.001-04:002011-04-30T17:29:02.076-04:00Margot PupdateLittle Miss Margot is settling into her foster home much more quickly than we ever expected and she is making so much progress every single day! She loves getting belly scratches and goes crazy for the Dogswell chicken treats. This regal lady is even learning that dog food isn't half bad and has gotten much less fussy at meal time. (Though that won't stop her from looking at you adoringly if you are eating a hot dog!)
She loves to play with her foster dad and has even made an attempt or two at playing with her foster sister. All of this in less than two weeks! Margot still has her nervous moments but they are fewer and farther between and she spends a lot less time hiding out and a lot more time hanging out with her foster family and exploring her home. All she needed was love, patience and time and each day she shows us more of the wonderful dog that she is.
Margot also loves, loves, loves to go for long walks and as soon as her leash is clipped on, she can't wait to get out the door! She is a wonderful dog who just needs a permanent place to call home so that she can really settle in and shine!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
